When LIV Golf announced that South Africa’s Steyn City would host a tournament in its 2026 season, the announcement rippled through the country’s golf community with the force of something long anticipated finally arriving.

South Africa has produced some of the world’s greatest golfers — Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen — and the arrival of the world’s most talked-about golf league felt, to many, like overdue recognition.

“LIV was always about reinventing the sport,” explains a tournament spokesperson. “Golf has an image problem — it is perceived as exclusive, slow, and inaccessible. We are changing that.”

The gallery, some 12,000 strong across the weekend, represented the most significant golf gathering on South African soil in a generation.
