Crowned in Summer

Summer in South Africa is a particular kind of test for Black hair. The heat, the humidity, the chlorine of swimming pools and the salt of ocean breezes — all of it conspires to challenge even the most carefully maintained regimen.

Hairstylist and trichologist Zanele Moabi begins with hydration. “Black hair is naturally drier than other hair types, and summer exacerbates this. You need to be pre-emptive — deep conditioning every week, not just when you can feel the damage.”

For protective styling, she recommends braids and twists over weaves in the summer months. “Protective styles that let the scalp breathe are always better in summer.”

Her summer essential: cold water rinses. “End every wash with cold water. It closes the cuticle, reduces frizz, and adds an incredible shine. It’s the most underrated tip in natural hair care.”
