The skincare consultation has evolved. What was once a perfunctory exchange at a beauty counter has become something closer to therapy — an intimate conversation about skin, self-perception, and the daily rituals that shape how we present ourselves to the world.
“Every skin tells a story,” says Thandi Mokoena, whose practice in Sandton has a months-long waiting list. “Stress, diet, sleep, hormones — all of it shows up on the face. My job is to read that story and help write a better one.”
Aesthetician Palesa Khumalo, who trained in Paris before returning to Johannesburg, is evangelical about the power of active ingredients. “Vitamin C, retinoids, niacinamide — these are not just ingredients, they are the architecture of great skin,” she explains.
The new luxury consultation is multi-dimensional: it considers lifestyle, hormonal cycles, environmental stressors, and psychological wellbeing alongside the more technical aspects of skin physiology. It is, at its best, an act of care — both of skin and of self.
