The NFL Expands ‘NFL Africa’ Program to South Africa

The excitement is building as Cape Town gears up to welcome the National Football League (NFL) next weekend for a series of fan events in celebration of the kickoff of the 2023 NFL season. As part of the NFL Africa program, which aims to promote American football across the continent, the league is bringing its unique brand of sports entertainment to South Africa.

The ‘NFL Experience: Cape Town’ promises an immersive American football extravaganza for fans in South Africa. This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the prestigious Cape Town International Convention Centre.

American football enthusiasts and newcomers alike can look forward to a day filled with interactive NFL football activities, NFL Flag experiences, and an opportunity to delve into the rich history of the League. But that’s not all. Attendees will also get to savor authentic American cuisine and explore an array of NFL merchandise in what can only be described as an American football takeover.

Perhaps the highlight of the ‘NFL Experience: Cape Town’ will be the chance to get up close and personal with the iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy and a treasure trove of NFL memorabilia. For gaming enthusiasts, there will be activations featuring Madden NFL 24, Pro Era, and the chance to play with Wilson footballs. Fans can also shop for authentic player jerseys from Mitchell & Ness and fashionable apparel from Kingdom & Co.

To cap off the weekend festivities, the NFL is teaming up with ESPN Africa to host an NFL Viewing Party on Sunday, September 17, at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. The event, commencing at 17:00, will blend live entertainment featuring NFL Legends and local South African personalities with a live screening of an NFL game from week two of the season. Attendees can participate in games and stand a chance to win exciting prizes and giveaways.

Among the notable personalities gracing this event are Osi Umenyiora, former New York Giants defensive end and two-time Super Bowl champion, who is leading the NFL’s expansion efforts in Africa. Joining him is South Africa’s own NFL Legend, Gary Anderson, who enjoyed a remarkable 23-season NFL career. NFL veteran Kenny Stills will also be in attendance.

“It will be exciting to see the NFL in South Africa this September, in what promises to be a brilliant showcase of American Football in Cape Town for fans to enjoy,” said Umenyiora. “We’re thrilled to bring the game closer to South African fans and build excitement for the NFL throughout the country. Fans – get ready, this is just the beginning! The NFL will see you in September.”

“I’m proud to welcome the NFL to South Africa for the first time,” said Anderson. “I look forward to seeing fans in South Africa enjoy the ‘NFL Experience: Cape Town’ for themselves, and I can’t wait to join them in the stunning city of Cape Town to help grow fandom in my home country.”
