An hour’s drive from Johannesburg, the Cradle of Humankind is one of the most beautiful corners of South Africa: a series of rolling dolomite hills, ancient caves, and protected wilderness.

The Kitchen Garden Retreat has made its home in this landscape since 2019, occupying a restored farmhouse on 45 hectares. It is an unusual combination: a proper farm — with working vegetable gardens, an orchard, chickens, and a small dairy — alongside accommodation of genuine luxury.

“Everything comes from the land here,” says owner and head chef Nokwanda Moyo. “The asparagus you had at lunch was picked this morning. The sourdough is leavened with a starter that is seven years old.”

For Johannesburg residents seeking refuge without a long flight, the Kitchen Garden Retreat offers something increasingly rare: the sense of being genuinely, unhurriedly elsewhere.
