Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation, and Whisky Stocks, recently visited South Africa to launch the new Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve and unveil Glenmorangie The Original 12YO, a reimagined version of the distillery’s signature single malt, The Original 10YO.

Renowned as one of the world’s most awarded master distillers, Dr. Bill is celebrated for his pioneering contributions to the single malt whisky industry. His latest creation, the Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve, showcases his innovative approach to distilling, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands and the unique ex-American whisky casks used in its maturation.
The Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve is crafted by marrying three meticulously selected cask types: ex-bourbon casks, newly charred virgin oak casks, and ex-rye whisky casks—an unusual choice in the Scotch whisky industry. This combination results in a rich and subtly spiced single malt, characterised by notes of candied orange peel, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. The whisky offers a harmonious blend of classic fruity sweetness and the savoury spice of rye, making it versatile enough to be enjoyed neat, on ice, or in cocktails.
Dr. Bill, often referred to as “the mad scientist behind Glenmorangie” or “the rock star of whisky,” holds a PhD in biochemistry and is known for his ability to create intriguing new flavours through inventive cask finishes. With nearly 40 years of experience, he has become a prominent figure in the whisky world, revolutionising the single malt market with his innovative techniques.
In addition to launching the Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve, Dr. Bill introduced Glenmorangie The Original 12YO to South African audiences. This new expression replaces the original 10YO but retains the smoothness and complexity that fans have come to love, enhanced by an additional two years of ageing. The Original 12YO features a delightful swirl of creamy vanilla, citrus, honey, and peach, elevating its flavour profile and earning it a gold medal at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2024.
Dr. Bill’s visit to South Africa also included a unique experience—trekking with giraffes in the Swartberg Reserve in the Western Cape, a fitting activity given the giraffe-high stills used in the Glenmorangie distillery, which are the tallest in the industry.
With the launch of the Glenmorangie Triple Cask Reserve and the introduction of Glenmorangie The Original 12YO, whisky enthusiasts in South Africa can look forward to enjoying these exceptional single malts as part of Glenmorangie’s award-winning range.
