He stood tall in the dark days of apartheid, highlighting Africa\u2019s, and South Africa\u2019s plight to the world. A brilliant and headstrong artist, he was never shy to express his views about the African Continent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/2018\/04\/25\/a-celebration-of-bra-hugh-masekela-4-shows-only-joburg-theatre\/hugh-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-951\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-951\" src=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Hugh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a>A lot is known about South African music legend Hugh Masekela, but less about his affection and contribution to musical theatre in South Africa.\u00a0 His early years found him involved in the productions of the African Jazz and Variety road show and the internationally acclaimed King Kong \u2013 Africa\u2019s first Jazz opera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was an integral force in the creation of South Africa\u2019s most successful international musical\u00a0<strong><em>Sarafina!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0which had an incredible run on Broadway from 1988 to 1989, with a parallel cast running in Europe and Australia. He later initiated a musical theatre revue called\u00a0<strong><em>Songs of Migration<\/em><\/strong>, which toured South Africa, Europe and the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His last theatrical offering was\u00a0<strong><em>Gone Native: The Life and Times of Regina Brooks<\/em><\/strong>, which he musically initiated, composed and directed. It was staged successfully at the Soweto Theatre in 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>A Celebration of Bra Hugh Masekela<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0taking place this May will \u00a0include a melodic and dramatic tapestry of songs from\u00a0<strong><em>Sarafina<\/em><\/strong>!, directed by Mbongeni Ngema,\u00a0<strong><em>Songs of Migration<\/em><\/strong>, directed by James Ngcobo, and\u00a0<strong><em>Gone Native: The Life and Times of<a href=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/2018\/04\/25\/a-celebration-of-bra-hugh-masekela-4-shows-only-joburg-theatre\/thandisa\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-950\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-950 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Thandisa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a> Regina Brooks<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0directed by Makhaola Ndebele.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The celebration will star renowned\u00a0<strong>Thandiswa Mazwai<\/strong>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<strong>Sibongile Khumalo<\/strong>, who have previously collaborated with Bra Hugh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we celebrate Africa and Worker\u2019s month, this tribute will showcase<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>some<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>of his best known theatrical songs and compositions. It will feature contributions from some of his most loved collaborators and will shine a spotlight on South African talent.
