GRAMMY-nominated vocalist and songwriter Somi is entering a new creative chapter \u2013 and she\u2019s inviting listeners along for the journey. Her new album,\u00a0What Does It Take to Bloom?<\/em>, arrives on 7 August via her Salon Africana imprint, with the latest single \u201cSometimes Love (feat. The Cavemen.)\u201d setting the tone for what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recorded in Lagos with acclaimed Nigerian sibling duo The Cavemen., \u201cSometimes Love\u201d is a groove-heavy, sun-soaked reflection on how love appears in our lives \u2013 often unexpectedly, and in many different forms. Somi describes the track as a meditation on keeping an open heart and staying receptive to possibility, wherever we find ourselves along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does It Take to Bloom?<\/em> leans into a contemporary, global sound while staying rooted in heritage. Co-produced by Benjamin James of The Cavemen., the record weaves together jazz, soul, highlife, spoken word and Somi\u2019s African musical inheritance into an intimate exploration of uncertainty and change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the album, Somi poses a quiet but powerful question: do we realise we\u2019re growing while it\u2019s happening, or only once we look back and recognise who we\u2019ve become? That tension \u2013 between the moment and the memory, between becoming and being \u2013 runs through the project\u2019s lyrics and lush arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new single follows \u201cWe\u2019re All Falling,\u201d the lead track from the album and one of its most emotionally direct statements. Written in a period of personal loss, \u201cWe\u2019re All Falling\u201d confronts mortality with clarity, asking listeners to honour both their grief and their capacity to keep living fully in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somi\u2019s catalogue has long worked like a map, tracing migration, memory and identity between Africa and America. Previous projects have been anchored in specific geographies \u2013 Nigerian cities, Harlem, and the spiritual-political legacy of icons like Miriam Makeba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On What Does It Take to Bloom?<\/em>, the terrain shifts. Written and recorded between Dakar, Lagos, Paris and New York City, the \u201cplace\u201d being mapped is not a single city or community, but the self. Instead of pointing outward to a location, these songs look inward to chart how a person changes, heals and comes into fuller belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having spent years both within and just outside the global jazz scene, Somi has never sat comfortably inside one genre box. This album continues that refusal to be easily categorised: she stretches her voice further, takes more risks, and trusts instinct over expectation. In many ways, that artistic defiance \u2013 the decision not to shrink to fit \u2013 is part of the bloom the title refers to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its core, What Does It Take to Bloom?<\/em> is an album about belonging and the long, unfinished journey toward wholeness. Somi writes about experiences we can\u2019t control, the layered realities of womanhood, and the different paths of self-discovery that shape who we become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than offering neat answers, the record sits with complexity. It acknowledges that blooming isn\u2019t a single moment, but a series of choices, seasons and revelations. Somi hopes listeners will recognise pieces of themselves in these songs; and for those who don\u2019t, she extends an invitation to simply witness a woman coming home to herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
