The\u00a02016 ARTS ALIVE FESTIVAL\u00a0<\/strong>brings Joburg audiences the best in homegrown and overseas entertainment during the month of September.<\/p>\n The festival is 24 years old, and is a year away from celebrating its silver jubilee as an international African centered arts festival. But it is not just a build up to\u00a0next year that we are planning towards, as this year we continue to build on the past years of cultural exchanges, connections and dialogues with Africans on the continent and it\u2019s Diaspora.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This year\u2019s\u00a0Arts Alive\u00a0<\/strong>programme will feature artists from across the globe; India, Portugal, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, USA, Zimbabwe and France. The artistic offerings will include\u00a0music, theatre, literature,<\/strong>\u00a0poetry,<\/strong>\u00a0traditional dance and music. Music will include a diverse range from Jazz to Afrobeat, hip hop, kwaito, house, Jazz, dance hall reggae and much more.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cArts Alive allows the people of greater Joburg and its visitors to experience uplifting arts and culture. Arts Alive brings you the best in South African and global entertainment. We believe that everyone should have the privilege of accessing and experiencing quality music and cultural offerings,\u201d says\u00a0\u00a0Dudu Maseko, Executive Director: Community Development.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Festival\u2019s biggest event,\u00a0JAZZ ON THE LAKE\u00a0<\/strong>is not to be missed! It takes place at\u00a0Zoo Lake<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0Sunday 4th<\/sup>\u00a0September.<\/strong>\u00a0It will\u00a0start at 10am<\/span> and run until 5:30pm<\/span>, and it returns permanently to the Zoo Lake venue.<\/p>\n The event celebrates the beginning of Spring and launches the entire festival. It is free to the public and it\u2019s an event for the whole family drawing on a diverse audience from across greater Joburg.<\/p>\n The highlight for\u00a0JAZZ ON THE LAKE\u00a0<\/strong>includes acclaimed Nigerian artist,\u00a0Seun Kuti<\/strong>\u00a0with his 14-piece band, son of the great Afrobeat world icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Artists also featured include\u00a0Paco Sery<\/strong>\u00a0and his Parisian Band (Ivory Coast\/Paris). Paco Sery is regarded as one of the world\u2019s best drummers. He has played with the likes of Nina Simone, the Joe Zaiwinal Syndicate to Wayne Shorter,\u00a0Dee Dee Bridgewater, amongst many others.<\/p>\n Award-winning South African artists include Afro-soul singing sensation\u00a0Nathi<\/strong>, Afropop act\u00a0Mafikizolo<\/strong>\u00a0and talented SA jazz trumpeter, fresh from his stint in New York,\u00a0Lesedi Ntsane<\/strong>\u00a0and his home grown band, The Azanian Peoples Movement.<\/p>\n Surrounding roads within the Parkview area will be closed and the public are encouraged to use the free Park \u2018n Ride at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein and Marks Park in Emmerentia.. No bottles, alcohol and firearms will be allowed into the venue.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Festival also partners with the Department of Arts and Culture to present the\u00a04th<\/sup>\u00a0African International Women Writers\u2019 Symposium\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0September 15th to 17th<\/span>,\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0The Fringe, Joburg Theatre,\u00a0<\/strong>under the theme\u00a0Witness and Memory<\/strong>. This symposium will feature local and international writers and poets.
