The motivational and skills session was in celebration of #MandelaDay2019 and as part of Nescafe\u2019s #ThisIsOurGrind campaign to empower youth. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mobile coffee shop was placed at the WITS Library Lawns with a stage setup where Mzamo would give a talk later following sessions by experts to highlight the importance of a LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7401.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1375\" data-link=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/?attachment_id=1375\" class=\"wp-image-1375\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7404.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1376\" data-link=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/?attachment_id=1376\" class=\"wp-image-1376\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7404-1.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1387\" data-link=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/?attachment_id=1387\" class=\"wp-image-1387\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7400-1.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1393\" data-link=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/2019\/07\/19\/thisisourgrind-heres-what-we-learnt-from-googles-cmo-mzamo-masito-inspiring-talk-for-mandeladay2019-with-nescafe\/img_7400-1\/\" class=\"wp-image-1393\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mzamo took over the stage to talk about his career and\nthe hurdles he\u2019s had to go through to get to a position where he no longer\napplies for a job and offered guidelines to maximise your potential. My\npersonal highlight from his empowering talk was the point about knowing what\nyou want and the people that can help you achieve it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that a person is the sum of five people that they\nhang out with, \u201cSo if they suck, you suck, if they have poor values sooner or\nlater you\u2019ll also adapt to those values. You must choose to be around people\nthat are more progressive and not those who are not ambitious about life and\ntheir goals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mzamo said that sometimes we need to build the courage to\ncut off things, habits and people that may somehow hinder success in our lives.\nHe\nmade an example about how he almost failed his first year at University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7371.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1378\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI told my friends that I can\u2019t afford to fail because I\u2019m here on a scholarship that my mother is poor, and I have no father so I\u2019m going to try to study and get my degree. I\u2019ve had to build the confidence to approach my lecturers when I didn\u2019t understand a subject to say I don\u2019t know please teach me,\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says the lesson he learnt as a student is that he had\nto ask for help and that people will help you. That he wouldn\u2019t have made it\nhad he never stepped up to ask for assistance. He mentions that one particular\nlecturer who agreed to teach him. Every day for an hour they met for lessons\nand he eventually became better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to know what you want and surround yourself\nwith people that can help you achieve it. You are the average of the five\npeople you hang out with. Sometimes you have the decency to have enough courage\nto grind on your own, cut off certain things, habits and people that pull you down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mzamo highlighted some of the issues as the youth he\nbelieves are pulling us down and farther away from reaching our full potential.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7379.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1380\" data-link=\"https:\/\/braamvibes.co.za\/?attachment_id=1380\" class=\"wp-image-1380\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hang around with friends that have the same issues\nand problems as us. You\u2019re both poor, you don\u2019t know how to speak English\nproperly. You basically club together in your misery and you comfort each other\nin your misery. It doesn\u2019t help. We\u2019re all miserable anyway so how will we help\neach other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another powerful point Mzamo made was that if you\u2019re not\nwilling to chase your dream, to do what it takes and more to reach it, if you\u2019re\nalways scared to hustle then you won\u2019t get anywhere in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s a misconception that having a degree equals success but the reality is that wealth is built on three things; on the job, coach and mentoring and the formal education which only accounts for 10% of your development. It\u2019s important for us to build and have a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate our competencies.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7388.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1382\" width=\"510\" height=\"339\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said whilst completing his studies he had so many side\nhustles that ensured that he had a portfolio of evidence to compliment his degrees.\nMzamo worked as a tutor and believed that he had to help other people as he was\nalso getting the help he needed from other people as well. Other jobs he did\ninclude being a receptionist but fast forward he was Managing Executive, Brand\nand Comms Africa Group at Vodacom, and vice President Brand Building, Foods at\nUnilever and currently Chief Marketing Officer for Google Africa. He\u2019s advice\nis that we need to start searching for opportunities outside the borders of\nSouth Africa because there\u2019s a lot to learn from other African countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cA lot of South Africans don\u2019t think outside Africa. They all want to work in the country when they can work anywhere in the world. My sister works in New York and she has been there for five years. There are South Africans that studied here at WITS who work for Google in different countries. You\u2019re more likely to learn something new if you work outside the borders of South Africa. There\u2019s a lot I\u2019ve learnt in Now Nigeria, and Kenya. If you work in SA you will always be mentally colonized.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day ended with group sessions where students could ask\nMzamo anything. He said that the key themes that kept coming up is that\nstudents wanted to know how they can fuel their grind, side hustles, and the\nguiding principles and tools are to help them achieve their goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key thing for me is being able to share not how to\ndo it but rather what the guiding principles are because your how and my how will\nnever be the same but principles are principles. For example, the principle of\nhaving courage to speak up and have a voice, pushing through fear, managing it\nand even knowing that your limitations don\u2019t mean that you\u2019re not smart, are\nsome of the guiding principles they can adopt. Another is that your\nintelligence is not enough. You have to compliment it. You must have side\nhustles that will build your portfolio of evidence.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/braamvibes.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_7395.jpg?fit=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1385\" width=\"471\" height=\"313\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we were wrapping up the interview, Mzamo is reminded\nof a quote by Kaya FM radio presenter that echoed his sentiments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cGreg Maloka said something powerful- he said our success was partly an accident. But your success must be by design and not by accident.
